HEALWA Outreach Coordinator
As HEALWA Outreach Coordinator for Washington State University Health Sciences in Spokane, I promoted HEALWA’s free online medical library to healthcare professionals in Eastern Washington. This outreach included identifying trusted networks through which I could publicize the collection, presenting at healthcare conferences, communicating directly with program administrators and medical school professors, and writing stories for magazines.
Alumni magazine article – 550 words
For example, I knew that WSU had a large community of medical alumni, so I wrote this human interest story for Washington State Magazine. It’s about a school nurse (and WSU alumna) who uses HEALWA to research the complex medical issues that affect her Colville School District students.
Newsletter article – 500 words
On the job, I quickly learned that the best way to reach healthcare practitioners was through channels and networks they already trusted. To communicate with nurses across Washington State, I wrote an article for the Washington State Nurses Association magazine, this time emphasizing evidence-based medicine and the reliability of HEALWA in the era of Dr. Google.

Often I communicated directly with nurse education coordinators, professors at medical and nursing schools, and clinic administrators. They, in turn, kept their employees and students informed about the resources available to them in the HEALWA collection. This letter followed up an in-person visit I made to the Inland Massage Institute.
Online Library Guide
To ensure that all healthcare practitioners could learn how to access their HEALWA accounts on their own schedules, I maintained an online HEALWA tutorial. It included step-by-step instructions for how to sign up for a HEALWA account, a tour of HEALWA’s resources, and background information about the collection. In summer 2020, I added a special toolkit of resources about race and healthcare. It included databases, scholarly books, patient materials, and government resources on health equity.
Freelance Writing Samples
Before working for WSU, I balanced a series of freelance writing jobs.
One of those contracts was with Transom, a creative agency based in Seattle. When they redesigned a website for Ambrose Construction, I wrote the copy.

I was also a spokesperson for Driscoll’s Berries, the largest berry distributor in the world. They tapped me to write recipes, essays, and blogs, and to star in a commercial about raspberries. Here’s a piece I wrote for them where I suggest new ways to create jams and pies by combining Driscoll’s Berries with herbs. I styled and shot the photography, too.
